| Mary Miller and Dolly McGinn enjoy their weekend in Glencoe! |
In an effort to spotlight what Glencoe has to offer, the Glencoe Area Chamber of Commerce selected Ms. Mary Miller, 60, and her sister, Ms. Dolly McGinn, 67, of St. Paul as Glencoe’s 2009 Honorary Citizens. The sisters were randomly chosen from the guest roster at the Super 8 Motel. They were in Glencoe with two additional family members to attend the Bobby Vee concert during Glencoe Days. When notified of their selection, Mary noted, “I was surprised, and I wondered if it was for real. I’m kind of shy, so I wasn’t sure about it at first, but it was a lot of fun!”
As the town’s honorary citizens, Mary and Dolly received a complimentary two night stay at the Super 8 Motel and a gift basket. The gift basket included gift certificates to local restaurants and gifts from Glencoe businesses. Mary noted that she and her family enjoyed shopping and dining with the gift cards. “We had the best roast beef sandwiches at Bump’s Family Restaurant - it was a great meal!” The lodging, dining and shopping experiences in Glencoe left the sisters wanting more. Mary said that she wished she could have stayed longer, but she was due back at work on Monday.
The other honor bestowed upon the sisters was their appointment as Grand Marshalls for Sunday’s Glencoe Days Parade. “We loved riding in the parade. People were so friendly, and the man who drove us gave us a history of Glencoe. We enjoyed him and all the people who waved back at us!”
In addition to enjoying the lodging, dining and shopping in Glencoe, Mary and Dolly received guest passes for the 2009 season to the Glencoe Country Club, Glencoe Aquatic Center, and tickets to an upcoming Glencoe Brewer’s town team baseball game at Vollmer Field. With so much to do on their return trip, Mary and her family will be welcomed back with more small-town hospitality in the future.
“Glencoe is a clean, down-home, friendly city,” said Mary. Not only will the family look forward to visiting Glencoe again, but Mary said she would consider the community when she is planning for retirement.
