December 22, 2009: The City Council awarded over $3.1 in bids for the second phase of the City Center project on December 20, 2009. This work includes all of the interior remodeling work in the 1932 addition for the Public Library, City and other public Offices, Senior Center, and the Event Center; nearly 20 different contracts were awarded. The first phase which included demolition of the 1957 addition, new roof, new windows and some electrical work is nearing completion. The final segments of the first phase includes the installation of new windows, these should begin being installed in Mid-January. Temporary heat has been installed and everything is looking favorable for a August 1, 2010 completion date.
A $2 million bond will be issued in early 2010 to complete the funding for the project. $2.5 million in donations was raised for the $5.2 million project.
March 18, 2010: Driving by the City Center, you will notice various contractor vehicles in the parking lots. Crews are working hard to complete plumbing and electrical projects, while framing crews construct new walls and fill in locker openings.
Walls on the second floor have been torn down to open up the library space. Concrete has been poured in the lower auditorium area to create a level floor in the new event center. Both carpet and drapery have been selected, and some of the light fixtures are being restored-all while reservations for reunions, wedding receptions and holiday parties are being made!
Within the next week, the windows will start to arrive. The selected windows are similar to the original windows in the facility providing natural light throughout the building.
This past Monday night, the City Council approved plans and specifications for the site work, which includes 140 parking stalls. In addition, the facility will be handicapped accessible with at-grade entrances at the east and west parking lots. Bids for this final phase of the project will be opened on April 16, 2010. It is anticipated that the entire project will be complete in early July.
